Ryuichi Sakamoto (born January 17, 1952) was a Japanese composer, pianist, and music producer known for his eclectic style that blends classical, electronic, and pop music. He first gained prominence in the late 1970s as a member of the influential electronic music group Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), which helped pioneer synth-pop and techno music. Sakamoto's notable works include his solo albums "Left Handed Dream" (1981) and "BTTB" (1998), as well as film scores such as "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" (1983), which featured his collaboration with David Bowie, and "The Last Emperor" (1987), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score. His work on "The Sheltering Sky" (1990) and "The Revenant" (2015) further established his reputation as a leading film composer.
